Default Bergmann Collar Tabs

I was lucky recently to acquire a copy of a Mining/Metallurgical trade magazine from 2004. (See photo of the cover posted below.) The back cover has a beautiful presentation of DDR Bergmann collar tabs.

The Bergmann rank system has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I figured the more junk on the tab, the higher the rank. But the complete picture was never clear - until now!

The title of the photo is:

"Kragenspiegel der Bergmannsuniform der DDR
Berufsgrade der Beschaeftigten im Industrieberiech des Ministeriums fuer Erzbergbau, Metallurgie und Kali der DDR"

Since the text is hard to read in the photo, I'll type out the rank groups here, verbatim as they appear on the cover. Please bear with me, as I can't make umlauted vowels I will place an "e" after the vowel instead of using the umlaut.

Note that rank groups I through UIII have silver colored, metal collar tab devices while rank groups MI through MIII have gold colored, metal devices.

OI through OIII have yellow/gold colored embroidered wreaths and inner border with the other devices in gold colored metal.

Also in the lower right hand corner of the cover is the following description of collar tab piping and devices:

Bergbau: Gelbe Biese, Schlagel und Eisen
Metallurgie: Rote Biese, Fuerkel, Haken und Stange

You'll also notice that all the tabs shown are for Bergbau (except for OIII, which is Metallurgie).

I think it's reasonable to assume that a similar rank system was used for the Metallurgie folks.

Those are some pretty nifty looking tabs! Thanks for bringing these to my attention, and thanks for the effort you put forth to show and explain them.

Rev462,

Yes the two organizations unsed the same rank structure and only varied in the different tools used on the collar tabs and either yellow or red trim depending on which organization it is. This all clearly shown in your magazine.

Regards,

Gordon
